During the launch of the “Team up to clean up” campaign over the weekend, Pikitup announced major plans to get the community involved in creating a cleaner society.
This campaign was launched on Saturday 27 February at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in Joubert Park, but will be carried out in every region of the city, Pikitup managing director Amanda Nair said. It will run as a series of clean-a-thons over the next five months both to educate and empower residents in terms of the effects of waste, as well as to mobilise and encourage communities to act against large-scale grime. Hot spots are still being identified for the campaign locally.
Region C’s depot manager Stella Wilson said her plans with the campaign are not yet finalised, but she is looking at launching the campaign in Bramfischerville and Doornkop first. This is something she hopes to finalise within the next week or two, she told the Record.
Unfortunately, when previous campaigns that were similar were taken to Roodepoort and Florida CBDs it attracted little attention and participation, Wilson told the Record.
“I want to maximise our impact, make the biggest difference we can make,” she said.
The campaign forms part of Pikitup’s Integrated Waste Minimisation Campaign (IWMC), which involves separation at source and initiatives like Jozi@Work and the Eco Rangers schools programme.
“Behavioural change at home, in the workplace and in schools is key to the success of waste prevention and minimisation,” Nair at the launch concluded.
