Dog reunited with pups once again
Lake Lucy Brown was reunited with her nine puppies once again this year on 16 January at the Florida Lake for a braai in their honour.
“We had a great day in the sun. They love the boerewors that we braai for them and they enjoy the swimming pool just as much,” said Sarette Vos, caretaker of Lake.
The braai takes place annually on the puppies’ birthday to reunite the family of nine puppies with their mother, Lake Lucy Brown, who used to be just another stray dog that roamed the Florida Lake.
Once Lucy fell pregnant two years ago and found herself without a safe place to have her pups, Vos and her husband Jerry took it upon themselves to give the dog a home on 5 January 2014 and make sure that her litter was well cared for. Now, two years later the pups are all grown up and have since been homed, inoculated, spayed and nurtured. “They all went to training and they continue to enrich our lives daily” say the families of the puppies.
On 17 January 2014 the Record did an article on Lake and her nine pups, all named after the word “water” in different languages “This is because they all come from the Florida Lake,” says Vos. The Record also helped to trace Lake’s mother from articles placed in 2014.
A resident phoned Vos saying he noticed a resemblance between Lake and one of his dogs. “He was sure that Lake had been from the same litter,” she said.
This lead helped them find Lake’s mother in early March that same year, a Weimaraner Labrador cross breed. “Just as it was a big pleasure to help Lake and her puppies find a good start in life , finding Lakes mother only brought more meaning, joy and comfort to our hearts. Today we know that Lake and her pups were worth more than all the work and costs. Finding Lake’s mother brings a sweet ending to the puppies’ troubled start in life,” says Vos.
Vos takes it upon herself to save many other animals in and around the Florida area and says she plans to continue to do so for as long as she has the means. Her only question remains, “Who might the father of these pups be?”
