With their entries deadline just less than two weeks away, organisers of the West Rand Music Festival have been inundated with entry forms for this year’s event.
Scheduled for the week of 2 to 7 May, the annual festival was founded in 1991 and has expanded to include choirs, dance and drama.
“Since being under new management for the past four years, the festival attendance just keeps on growing,” said the festival organisers Gordon, Tdrinda and Bertha Woods.
From solo acts, flutes and clarinet to guitar, piano and harp, the festival welcomes all musical instruments and genres to take part.
Participants range from beginners to university students.
“Last year a choir where all members exceeded 80 years of age participated, while the youngest participant was only 4-years-old of age,” they said.
Adjudicators of the highest calibre are part of the festival to ensure the competition is and remains of premier standard.
“We are all excited about the vastly expanded festival this year. We are especially looking forward to brilliant productions from those who have already entered. The festival is growing from strength to strength and the standard is, as usual, of top quality,” they said.
The festival is working together with Edu Music on gifts and vouchers for deserving participants and The IDA Care Foundation is yet again a major sponsor.
Woods said he hopes music pupils will take advantage of the festival to practice their examination material.
“The festival will be in May, just before the schools and UNISA, ABRSM and Trinity have their music examinations, so those who would like to brush up on their performances and have professional adjudicators give constructive feedback before their exams should enter,” he said.
The venue for the Festival will be the NG Kerk in Florida Park and the deadline for the entries will be 1 March.
“This venue is well suited for the Festival and has fantastic acoustics. No matter your instrument or genre or performing art, you are sure to have a fantastic time,” said Woods.
