Over and above giving your significant other some special attention and perhaps a romantic date this Valentine’s Day, why don’t you share some life-saving liquid love?
Mothers in labour, cancer patients and accident victims can really do with your life-saving blood transfusion this February, according to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). They invite those who choose not to go the conventional route with the month of love to donate to their cause. Given the growing need for blood, and to maintain good stock levels, SANBS endeavours to collect at least 3 000 units of blood daily.
Each unit of blood that is given could benefit up to three recipients, thanks to processes by which it is split into various products, including platelets. Platelets are pivotal in treating, for example, patients who suffer from aplastic anaemia.
“Blood donors are anonymous heroes who are the reason for thousands of people getting a second chance to live.
“Valentine’s Day is a chance for us to show love and generosity; this act of kindness is even more special when it includes people that we may never meet,” SANBS chief marketing officer Thapelo Mokoena in a press statement said.
Donors must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50kg and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, and are encouraged to eat prior to making a donation.
