Crunching gears for a cause

Cyclists riding for a good cause.

21 cyclists will participate will participate in the Arola Cycle Tour between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein from 18-20 February.

The annual event consists of 21 cyclists who will be travelling 483 kilometers in three days on their bicycles.

The aim for the Arola Tour is to sponsor 2500 Bibles and to reach out to the community.

Plans for an upgrade of the recreation area of the Florida Fire Brigade include painting, vinyl floors, new furniture and catering supplies.

“In order to plan a tour of this scope, we have a team of dedicated volunteers managing every aspect of this event. We are in need of sponsorship towards the 2500 bibles as well as corporate companies to get involved in the operational costs of the tour”, said tour organiser Christo Prins.

Over the past two Arola tours the Mosaiëk cycling community have contributed to the distribution of 1,670 Bibles which formed part of the total of R2 000 000 that was collected over the past 14 years of the tour.

This tour started 14 years ago to raise funds for Bible distribution and was originally held between Parys and Boemfontein.

Two years ago cyclists, from the Mosaïek Community in Roodepoort decided to add an extra stage from Johannesburg to Parys.

This gave them the opportunity to join 100 riders from the other regions, culminating in a ceremony at the Bible Society in Bloemfontein.

The tour spans 11 municipalities, including Randfontein, with involvement from JMPD, Fairlands SAPS, ARS Medical Services, Florida Fire Brigade and countless support vehicles, water points and technical back-up.

As a first ever, Cape Town based road and track specialist, and Springbok cyclist Wimpie van der Merwe will join the riders.

Although retired from competitive cycling, Wimpie held a m 11 world records and is still currently the holder of 10 Continental speed and distance records.

He became world champion 8 times and competed internationally in both road and track cycling from 1977 to 1994.

Wimpie has a wealth of knowledge, tips and techniques that he will be sharing with his fellow riders on the way.

“I realized soon after my first world record that God is more concerned about my character than my reputation. As a record, a reputation is temporary and soon forgotten, whilst a character determines the fibre of who I am and will be remembered by. Participating with other like-minded persons in the Arola Cycle Tour creates an opportunity to share this Good News with people who have never encountered what I experience daily”, said van der Merwe.
