Video: Discovery house up in flames

Resident takes a video of a house on fire, which took firefighters more than seven hours to extinguish.

A house in Discovery was the centre of attention as a fire had broken out around midnight (Monday 1 February) and billowed forth until after sunrise.

Resident Diederik Harkema said the fire broke out in Nourse Street.

“I smelt smoke but decided not to leave my home, rather opting to take my camera this morning and see if I could get any footage,” he told the Record.

Harkema managed to capture a 30-second video of the house engulfed in flames with his quadcopter (‘drone’) camera before he took his children to school at around 7am.

It is not yet clear what caused the blaze.

Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Nana Radebe did not comment on the extent of the fire but confirmed fire trucks from the nearby Florida Fire Station responded to the scene just after midnight.

“They found a woman, between the ages of 25 and 35, trapped inside. They managed to get her out through one of the windows and she was treated on scene for smoke inhalation,” she said. The woman did not sustain any other injuries and is recovering at home.

Radebe said the cause of the fire will be investigated in the week ahead. Firefighters worked hard to halt the flames before the entire house could burn down.

A mere five days ago a fire had broken out in a house in Hulley Street, Witpoortjie from which two women and three babies managed to escape. The cause of that fire is also not clear yet and firefighters struggled for over an hour to extinguish the flames.
