“If I can spin, you can, too”

The elderly challenge residents to exercise for charity this February.

“If a 81-year-old woman who resides in an old-age home can attend a spinning class, so can you.”

That’s the message Thelma Fouché, a very active resident of Ons Huis Old Age Home in Florida uses to encourage residents to attend an upcoming fundraising event. At 81 she’s willing to participate in a spinning class to raise funds for their old age home and some of its less fortunate residents.

On Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February a ‘Spinathon’ will be held to benefit Ons Huis at Spinnwizz in Helderkruin. This was the brainchild of Mariaan Vorster, whose mother lives in the home. The Spinathon, which she hopes to make a regular event, was started on Mandela Day last year. They managed to raise around R17 000 for the home in one day, of which she took no commission or fee.

“We received such massive support and contributions that I want to make more such events possible,” she told the Record.

Mariaan has the Spinnwizz studio for two days and hopes to book every possible class full of gymnasium enthusiasts willing to exercise for charity. Last year, Fidelity Security was very charitable, booking a full class of their own and paying double the fee, she said.

“I personally challenge other companies in the area to do the same.

“Get your employees or colleagues fit, replace one of your weekly work outs with this spinning class and help an elderly person out.”

Charity spinning classes will be held during the day on 5 and 6 February at Spinnwizz in Tuscan Square, corner of Ruhamah and Mimosa Streets, Helderkruin at R100 per person per class.

Ons Huis will also be selling some pancakes for further fundraising on the day, so bring your spare change.
