I live at the foot of the Helderkruin waterfall and my unit overlooks the Helderkruin valley. Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve several misguided persons started shooting off powerful fireworks and crackers that lit up the sky for an hour or more. Everywhere I could hear dogs barking frantically, howling and whining.

The usual call of owls and other nocturnal birds in the area of the waterfall were eerily silent. I found a dove crouched in a corner of my patio, put to flight in the middle of the night by what can only be called the actions of selfish, stupid and ignorant people.

I was most upset by the cheering of party revelers before yet another cracker or firework went off. I just want to say shame on you, to those culprits who broke the law by buying illegal fireworks from street vendors and other illegal suppliers.

Shame on you for scaring the pets of others and our birds out of their wits. But, most of all, if the guilty ones have pets of their own, shame on you twice!
