Update: Police gives their side of ‘genital’ incident

'Victim' allegedly a twice convicted robber.

According to Colonel André Laing of Roodepoort Police, the version of the victim in the ‘exposed genitals’ case is untrue.

Laing said the video footage of the incident was examined and the two police officers involved were questioned.

“The police did not tell the man to drop his trousers. The opposite is true. He did it to distract the officers from their search for drugs, while a taxi driver, who allegedly hides the drugs for the dealers, filmed the incident. We are satisfied with the officers’ explanation,” said Laing.

The police officer in question (who will remain anonymous), categorically denied the allegations and had the following to say:

• Numerous suspects who had been arrested before as well as a councillor confirmed the suspect was selling drugs

• He never was ordered to undress but did it to create a diversion and a public spectacle.

• The suspect had been convicted of robbery before.

• He was treated with respect and was taken to the police station where he volunteered a large amount of information to police.

• The suspect admitted to selling drugs on behalf of a Nigerian male who had been arrested two times in the past.

• The police officer has no previous convictions for violent behaviour.

• He has been running the drug unit for the past three years under extreme stressful conditions and with a lack of manpower. He has received various accolades from the public for what he achieves in the war on drugs.
