Residents of Horizon View engaged in fire drills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstrations at Horizon View Block Watch’s Crime Awareness Day on Saturday, 21 November.
“The charity event was hosted to create awareness in the community due to the increase of crime in the area,” said organiser, Alvin Montgomery.
The interactive drills and workshops between the residents and members of The Emergency Medical Services resulted in them receiving first-hand experience on what to do when there is a fire.
“So what will happen if you run out of water while you are trying to hose down a fire?” asked seven-year-old Francois Lourens.
“We either use an available swimming pool or a nearby fire hydrant,” answered Lucky Modise from EMS.
They were also taught what to do in emergency cases and how to stay safe in their homes.
The charity event which was in aid of Sparrow Ministries, received various donations such as groceries and toiletries from all who attended.
Sparrow Ministries provides a haven to about 65 adults and children who have been infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
Alvin said the Block Watch hopes to host a crime awareness day every three months.
“Our efforts are definitely beginning to show positively in the area and it was good for us to get the neighbours in the area to come along. I am happy to say the day was very successful,” he added.
