Haley returns to her love

She made an emotional return in August at the Bidvest Unity Walk.

It has been five months since Roodepoort Athletics Club runner Haley Ryan has been in recovery from an accident that almost took her life.

The runner was participating in the Colgate Road Race in Boksburg when she was mowed down by an alleged drunk driver in May.

The Discovery resident had to be airlifted to a local hospital with a broken femur, pelvis and had to undergo a skin graft.

Roodies athlete still in critical condition

She made an emotional return in August at the Bidvest Unity Walk where she was pushed in a wheelchair by her club mates Conrad and Antoinette de Buys as well as her daughter Cassidy.

“They pushed me for the first nine kilometers of the race but I decided to walk the last kilometer. Antoniette motivated me to come back because I was very reluctant, but the support and encouragement of everyone allowed me to take a step forward and participate in the race,” said an emotional Haley.

This week, she finished her first five kilometer race where she walked along with some of her teammates and she was emotional as she walked across the finish line to complete the race.

“Once you’re a runner you are in the running community for life. I couldn’t believe how caring everyone was and wanted to know how I was doing and that is special. I’m still in rehabilitation and physiotherapy but things are going well. I am now aiming to participate in the 2 Oceans Marathon next year,” she said.

The driver was arrested and faced charges of drunken driving, reckless or negligent driving and attempting to flee the scene.
