What would a car-free precinct look like?

The Florida Toastmasters took a different turn with their recent meeting.

The Florida Toastmasters adopted a different mindset during their recent meeting, thinking about the Eco Mobility World Festival and what a future would be like without cars.

Sergeant-at-arms Lawrence Makeleni thumped the gavel at 7.30pm and the opportunity to be part of the transformative future arose. Clive Goodman, winner of the recent Area Humourous Speech contest, kept the audience entertained throughout the meeting. Five prepared speeches were delivered.

The first speaker, Charlene Firmin, delivered the ice breaker speech, ‘About me’. She spoke about the huge changes in her life when she relocated from Durban to Johannesburg.

Second speaker Tebogo Legodi’s speech was titled ‘How to increase traffic to your website’ and outlined three stages of how to prepare a website to attract potential viewers and create easily-accessible information.

Lawrence Makeleni spoke the ‘Truth about caffeine’, making the audience aware of the benefits and pitfalls of coffee.

Fourth speaker Paul Nicolai spoke about the journey of life, from primary school to following a career and being presented with the ‘golden watch’.

‘The golden answer’, delivered by fifth speaker, Maggie Temana, handled the topic of filtration systems and the failure of them, due to municipal authorities hiring unqualified personnel and ineffective management.

Tim Knights was master of table topics for the evening, and the following questions were drawn, making for interesting answers:

• Who would you like to meet from the past and why?

• Who do you perceive to be the funniest person and why?

• Should mothers stay at home?

• If you were a mad scientist, what would your new invention be?

• Which steps would you follow to become a millionaire?

• If there was one colour in the world, which colour would you choose?

Makeleni was awarded the trophy for the best prepared speech for the evening while Knights was elected best evaluator. The best impromptu speech was delivered by Goodman.
