Springboks fall to the All Blacks

It was an intense game of rugby between two old foes South Africa and New Zealand.

Victorious in defeat may not be the right words to use to describe the Springbok’s loss to the All Blacks this weekend but it comes close.

The match was a nailbiter the second the referee blew the whistle to signal the start of the match. Played at Twickenham stadium, the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup was a brilliant display of world class rugby.

In the first half, New Zealand dominated in possession and territory but South Africa would not be tied down as they tried to exploit the space and giving it their all in the breakdown.

This led to Handrè Pollard putting the first points on the board.

However, in the fifth minute Jeromè Kaino scored a try with Dan Carter converting. Pollard would add two more penalties to the scoreline, giving the Springboks a 12-7 lead going into the break.

From highballs used to try and unsettle Willie le Roux to grubber kicks which were used in frustration as the All Blacks were kept quiet was a tactic to notice during the game.

The second half wasted no time as Carter struck a perfect drop goal which brought his team closer within two points of South Africa’s score.

The momentum started to shift as Beauden Barrett went over the try line in the 52nd minute with Carter converting for a 12-17 lead.

The rest of the match slipped away from South Africa despite being awarded two penalties converted by Pollard and Pat Lambie as the All Blacks hung on for a 18-20 victory.

They will now take on Australia in the final after the beat Argentina 29-15.

The Springboks will now play the Pumas in the third/fourth playoff matches.
