FLCC to host school league race

Florida Lake Canoe Club will host school league race.

Florida Lake Canoe Club will host a race at Florida Lake for all juniors throughout Gauteng at the end of the month.

Julian’s Organisation People Who Care 2 will ensure nutritional support for all the children requiring sustenance after hard racing.

The race distances will be age appropriate as the U/8 canoeists will compete in a three kilometre. The race distance will increase in relation with age through to canoeists who are 18- years-old.

Juniors who are underprivileged and from low socio-economic backgrounds are coached free of charge. This is encouraged by the clubs and supported with equipment and transport by the Gauteng Canoe Union.

Club members have proved their worth in competition as they build their confidence and self image by achieving exceptional results.

“Races are hosted by various clubs throughout Gauteng during the year and all participants earn points for completion, on a sliding scale. Medals are presented for podium positions in each age group for both girls and boys. The consistent and regular participants also find their points accumulate and are often awarded for highest points earned at the end of the year,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

The points accumulate throughout the year until the annual prize giving in November where the individual paddlers are recognized for their achievements.

The total of the points accumulated by each paddler is also credited to the school they represent, and the club where they are coached and trained.

There are 34 high schools and 31 primary schools represented by paddlers throughout the league races which includes places such as Secunda, Parys and Pretoria.

After their races, the young paddlers will be able to race Dragonboats for a different discipline experience and for fun.
