Devon ready for West Rand Open

Squash player Devon Hendriksen gunning for West Rand open title

More than 80 professional squash players will be descending upon Western Rackets Squash Club this week.

They will be participating in the first West Rand Open taking place this Thursday.

Fans will be out in their numbers to support local favourite Devon Hendriksen.

The Helderkruin resident, who is ranked eighth in South Africa aims to win the tournament.

“This is the last tournament of the season and I want to end it off with a victory in front of my home crowd. The competition is tough but I want to win,” he said.

Devon, started playing squash when he was five-years-old and now at 29, has racked up various accomplishments such as winning the U/23 National Championships twice, the SA Student Championships twice and being in the top 10 of the World Student Games twice.

“My father introduced me to squash and that is where my passion for the sport began. With Prince and Salming as my sponsors of shoes and racquets, I’ve been able to take my game further. My coach Craig Wapnick has been a great influence in my progress to,” he said.

In the West Rand Open, Devon will be facing off against the countries top 10 players such as Kelvin Ndhlovu, Rodney Durbach, Gary Wheadon, Michael Wood and Gary Naidoo.

Devon is the captain for the Central Gauteng Men’s A team and the number two ranked player in Central Gauteng. He is also the current club champion for Western Rackets.
