School of violence on final warning

MEC says he is saddened by his decision

The school that has been plagued by violence, intimidation, protests and allegations of racism, has been given a final chance.

The Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for Education, Panyaza Lesufi has yesterday announced that if there is one more incident at Roodepoort Primary he will close it indefinitely. This comes in the wake of a petrol bombing incident last week as well as the arrest of two armed parents.

Since the re-opening of the school, which is in a dispute with parents over the appointment of a black principal, pupil attendance figures have dwindled and teachers regularly do not show up for work out of “fear for their lives”.

“It is with a heavy heart that I will have to close the school to protect pupils, if the violence continues,” said Lesufi. Plans are already in place to distribute pupils and teachers to surrounding schools.
