Accident leaves Durban Deep residents fuming

This sparked the residents into a rage as they started blocking Cemetery Road with bricks and other material.

Residents of Durban Deep blocked off access to Cemetery Road yesterday after a taxi mowed down five-year-old Fana Ramakatsa.

According to eyewitness Nandipha Mjungu, the boy and his seven-year-old sister Neo were on their way home, walking on the side of the road when the taxi collided with the child.

Neo then allegedly ran home in fear while the taxi driver and residents tried to assess the little boy’s condition.

The incident had a twist as another taxi driver, who was trying to drive through the scene brandished a firearm to threaten people to move out of the way.

After waiting for police and ambulance to arrive, the taxi driver who hit the little boy took matters into his own hands and drove the boy to a hospital.

“Taxi drivers in this area have no respect for pedestrians and commuters. They drive wherever they want and our children have to duck and dive even when they’re peacefully playing on the side of the road,” said Mjungu.

Just last week Thursday, an elderly woman in her mid-70s was hit by a taxi in the morning while waiting for transportation. This incident occured at Cemetery Road. The woman suffered moderate injuries.
