Wilson claims major bowls title
Discovery Bowling Club host successful Sables Open Masters.
It was an emotional weekend for Wilson Malobolo as he won the Sables Open Master’s this weekend.
He was up against Mervin Lynn Junior in the final. The man from Witpoortjie Bowling Club won 21-18 to claim his first major trophy.
In the women’s final, Susan Nel claimed victory against Rika Lynn in the final. Susan, who is a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, won 21-12.
12 Open Ladies and 12 Open Men, from within the Sables District, are invited each year to play in this tournament.
The format for the tournament was two sections of six players each, playing a round robin to determine the section winner.
Three games were played on Saturday and two games played on Sunday morning, with the two section winners playing against one another in the finals on Sunday afternoon.
Second in each section played against one another for the bronze medals.
In the men’s section, Protea player Morgan Muvhango walked away with the bronze medal while Corrie Tagg claimed the fourth position.
In the women’s section, Nici Neal was awarded the bronze medal and Karen Johnston finished in fourth position.
“The Sables Players Association committee, with the assistance of Mervin Lynn Senior and Billy Higgins, were tasked with organizing this prestigious event. With many hours of hard work and effort put in by the organizing committee, in arranging raffle hampers, record and result keeping, teas and lunch, the tournament got off to a silky smooth start,” said Sables Players Association President Graeme Morton.
