After three known hijacking attempts on Sunday 17 and Monday 18 May, the On Florida Community Forum warns residents to be alert.
On Sunday 17 May a woman was shopping at Town Square Shopping Centre in Weltevreden Park around lunch time, their alert email read. She left the centre and on her way to her home in Florida Park she noticed a Silver Audi A4 trailing her.
“She contacted her husband and drove past her home and around the block, which is when the suspects stopped following her. Her alertness saved her,” Caleb Finn in a press statement said.
Shortly after the first hijacking attempt a woman pulled her vehicle into her driveway in Horison after going shopping. Three men in and Audi A4 (partial registration number BC 39 GP) followed her into her driveway and attempted to hijack her. She fought them off and the suspects fled having stolen only a ring. The victim had minor injuries.
On Monday night 18 May a man pulled his vehicle into his driveway in Rebecca Street when a number of men in a silver Honda Jazz attempted to hijack him.
“The victim rammed his vehicle into the suspects’ vehicle and the suspects started shooting.
“The driver and one of his passengers sustained gun shot wounds,” Finn wrote.
The pair were treated on scene by ER 24 paramedics and transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition. Florida CPF Sector 2 patrollers secured the scene after which Florida Police launched an investigation.
“We wish to remind residents to exercise extreme caution when entering and exiting your diveway and any other parking lot.
“Statistically, most hijackings take place outside residents’ homes,” Finn wrote.
“Be especially cautious when driving home from a shopping centre, filling station or public place.”
Finn later told the Record that the issue was raised in the Florida CPF meeting last night (20 May) and they are working closely with police to formulate a plan of action.
Florida Police spokesperson Lydia Dikolomelo committed to updating the Record on the investigation as more information becomes available.
