Roodies braai for Comrades
The club hosted a braai in their honour to wish them good luck on their journey.
More than 68 Roodepoort Athletics Club members who will participate in the Comrades Marathon later this month had a good send off.
Family and friends were in attendance as club chairman Charlie Herselman handed over the athlete’s official race numbers for Comrades.
“It is a nice day for runners and their families to get to know each other. Members from other clubs are also here to enjoy this wonderful day,” said Club liaison Vincent Meyer.
The club will also be wearing caps for Hayley in support of their member Hayley Ryan who was run over by a car during a race in Boksburg.
Hayley had also qualified to participate in the Comrades Marathon.
“We want to give her moral support during this tough time and for her to know the club is thinking about her,” said Vincent.
This year’s Comrades Marathon will be 877 meters longer than normal due to road works in Pinetown.
The Comrades Marathon Association made the decision in accordance with its strict protocols on runner safety.
