Almost everyone living in Roodepoort has at one time or another over the years bought something from the Cajee family.
But now after almost a century the family has decided to close Cajee’s Jewelers and incorporate it into their electronic store. This comes after a recent break-in at the store which still leaves the family baffled.
According to Faziela Cajee, whose grandfather Bhajee Cajee started the business in 1921, the break in has left them despondent.
Over a weekend in April they could not determine on what day, thieves first broke through the back wall of the store in Berlandina Street and then used C4 explosives to blow open the mammoth more than a hundred-year-old Ratner safe. (Ratner Safes, which was established in 1889, were one of the top three safe manufacturers in Engalnd at the turn of the previous century and it is alleged that between 1930 and 1970 none of their safes could be blown open.)
The criminals made off with R500 000 worth of loot. Cajee says she is very disappointed in the police’s lack of enthusiasm during the initial investigation on the crime scene.
“We have lost faith in our police force. We have lost faith in the future of our country,” said Cajee. She also says it is a mystery how the criminals broke through a wall and set of explosives without being heard.
The Record is currently waiting for an update on the status of the case from the Roodepoort Police.
