They cannot afford to be bribed

This railway crossing at Lockies Lane and First Avenue in Florida feeds Florida Shopping Centre, bus stops and schools people cross as it is convenient and also much safer than the monkey urine soaked bridge crossing two blocks up.

These people are from sub economic housing and really cannot afford being bribed or summons every time they cross, also they have no indication that the crossing is illegal there are no notices to indicate it is not allowed. They have to get to bus stops, schools and taxi ranks during the week. This crossing has existed for more than 80 years and nothing has been done about making it safer over that time I think four or five inebriated people have been killed.

Now we have a railway bakkie with police to catch the offenders they take them to Roodepoort Police Station because Florida has been under renovation for over two years. Once these people have been summoned they have to find their own expense after having to pay R300. These are men, women and four children. These people are our residents and we need their buying power as an investment in our greater Florida but they are being abused and bullied by the tactics of SAR & H. Councillor cannot do anything because the railway falls out of local government. Who is going to demand signage on the crossing and some compensation to our community from the millionare railways.
