
In a commendable move, Metrobus managing director Mavela Dlamini admitted at a press briefing on Monday that the operator needs to drastically pull up its socks.
During the briefing that followed a spate of recent Metrobus accidents, Dlamini cited the age of the operator’s buses as the main cause of accidents and poor service.
Of the 412 buses Metrobus has to service its 229 routes
• 25 are less than five years old;
• 270 have been in use for ten years or more;
• and of the above 270 busses ten has been in use for longer than 20 years.
As part of its plan of action to turn the service provider around Dlamini said drivers will be retrained, competency levels will be upgraded and there will be regular debriefing sessions with drivers.The first 150 of the new dual-fuel buses is also expected next month.
Metrobus transports 1,3 million passengers a month.
