There are few things that bring on the nostalgia more than paging through the yellow faded pages of the Record archives.
On the front page of the issue dated 12 April 1985 there were three lead stories. The first story is about one Patrick Nash who during his weekly treat to his girlfriend at the legendary Hugenot restaurant found a pearl in one of his Knysna oysters. The second article on this page was the announcement, with much fanfare, that ‘world-renowned pianist Janis Vakarelis’ was to perform at the Roodepoort Civic Theatre. On a more somber note the Record reported two explosions that went off at the Bounty restaurant in Maraisburg.
Back in 1985 a five litre box of wine would have set you back R6,99 and a one kilogram no-name washing powder only 99c.
The then Roodepoortv mayor, Ralph Classen attended the sad mass funeral of the victims of the Westdene bus disaster and looking in the letters section RM West complained even back then that during electricity outages in Helderkruin he could not reach the municipality. A young Raymond Ackerman also personally attended the opening of the Flora Pick n Pay.
At Sterlig drive-in You’re in the movies and Kill and kill again were showing and according to an employment placing company a projects engineer would earn R28 000 a year, get a company car, medical aid, pesion and a 13th cheque!
