Breaking News: Police lets alleged bakkie thief off the hook

Blockwatch upset with way matter was dealt with.

Information is still sketchy but it is alleged a member of Soweto police inadvertently let a suspected bakkie thief go.

At about noon today a garden service provider was busy in Strydom Street in Witpoortjie when one of the workers heard someone tampering with the company bakkie, according to an unofficial source associated with the Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) . The worker scaled the wall and found a suspect in the act of stealing the bakkie and  jumped onto the back of the bakkie. The suspects sped off and finally stopped at the Nissan dealership opposite Princess Crossing where a Soweto SAPS vehicle, marked with the word ‘garage’, was present.

The garden service employee explained to the police officer, who introduced himself as a warrent officer, what happened. The officer then told him that he “just quickly have to go into Nissan” and that the worker must watch the suspect until he comes back. When the officer left the suspect fled.

Members of the WSRNW expressed their dismay with the officer’s handling of the matter.
