I would like to respond to a letter that was placed in the Roodepoort record last week. The letter was regarding dogs that was walking on the side of the road.

I live in Robinson avenue, in Discovery. It is not possible to go for a walk in this neighbourhood. I can`t take my dogs for a walk around the block or my kids to ride their bikes down the street because of the dogs that are not kept in the yards. I went for a run down the street early January this year. Two Boer bulls squeezed through a gap between the gate and wall of the yard that they are kept in and chased me. I had to climb up a tree to get away from them. Further up the street there is a house with two gates to the yard.

The bricks in the wall next to the one gate is broken, and the dogs in this yard also get out into the street. They attacked my dogs when we went for a walk one Saturday morning. I keep them on a leash, but there really isn`t much I can do with them when other dogs run into the road and start attacking them.

My husband went for a ride on his bicycle around the Roodepoort Centre for the Elderly one day and a dog ran out of a yard where the gate was standing wide open. In an attempt to get away from the dog his cell phone fell out of his back pocket and the screen cracked. This was very expensive to repair. We all love our animals and want to keep dogs, but I think people need to be informed of the regulations around caring for our animals and assuring that they are not a danger/nuisance to your neighbours.
