According to Eskom’s Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe, the national power grid is under severe strain.
This would mean that unscheduled load shedding might occur today, 7 January.
Over and above an increase in electricity use since people have returned from holiday and businesses having opened again, two of Eskom’s generators have failed. The reason for the failure is unclear.
“We are not saying there will be load-shedding but the risk is high between noon and 10 pm. If we all work together and use electricity sparingly, we can avoid load-shedding,” said Phasiwe.
Eskom asked the public to reduce electricity use by 10 per cent.
