Unfortunately our animal friends never seem to live long enough and we recently said a sad goodbye to our big old dog. After a few weeks we could take the void she’d left behind no longer and felt that we could offer a loving home to another SPCA dog. My husband chose a Dalmation cross and we called her Snowy after the cartoon character Tintin’s little white dog.

When my special-needs daughter was being taken off the colourful Pathways Roodepoort bus upon arriving home, Snowy walked off down the road in pursuit of interesting smells and we did not realise that she was not in our yard when we closed the gate. By late afternoon my husband realised that Snowy was not home and immediately started driving around our neighbourhood in search of this conspicuously lovely animal. Heartbroken, we phoned the SPCA and our Roodekruin Vet to report her missing. She had only been with us for two weeks and I had no photos of her but resolved to write to our faithful Roodepoort record to see if anyone had picked her up. During the time she was away our pit bull cross, Tekkies, was inconsolable. He would not eat and moped around in a sulk, shooting accusatory glances at us for having removed all the joy from his life by losing his new playmate.

She had been missing for two days when I received a call from the Roodekruin Veterinary Clinic informing me that Snowy had been brought to them by a kind neighbour. I asked if the person was still there and insisted that they ask that they remain there so that we could thank them personally. Overwhelmed with surprise and joy, we rushed to fetch her. We were

greeted by Chantel Theron and her children who had found Snowy outside their property two roads up from our home.

They let her into their property and realised that she had recently been sterilised so had to belong to someone nearby. The children set about making posters and distributing them in the Helderkruin area. At the Roodekruin Vet they were informed that a desperate owner had called two days earlier looking for her.

Our family is whole again thanks to the Theron family. They are living proof that there are still good people in this world. We are so grateful for your kindness. Many, many thanks.

Julie, Chris and a very happy Tekkies.
