On Wednesday 8 October a resident, Lizel Jones witnessed a woman allegedly being raped in front of a church.
According to Jones the police did not want to open a case but Roodepoort Police has investigated the matter and says it was a misunderstanding.
Nonhlanhla Kumahlo, spokesperson for Roodepoort Police initially was shocked when she heard that the police refused to open a case.
“I was very surprised and did not know what was going on. We took the matter very seriously since the police has to open a case for the state, even if it is not the victim reporting it, ” says Kumahlo.
On investigation, Kumahlo found that the witness did not come to the station but reported the alleged rape to the police by phone. Because she was driving at that stage and quite traumatised by what she had witnessed she could not tell the police where she was or where the alleged rape took place.
Kumahlo has received the photos of the victim and is liaising with the witness to try and locate the victim who is said to be mentally ill.
