On 17 October Laerskool Jozua Naudé celebrated Bandanna Day.
Traditionally funds raised on National Bandana Day go towards paying for the expensive tissue typing (DNA) tests for new donors to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry. The school had a cause closer to home though. One of their pupils, 12-year-old Kundai Rukundu was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011. To show their solidarity with their classmate and to raise funds to cover her medical bills, the pupils bought bandannas from the school and they wore it on the day.
“Since we have a child that is affected by this disease in our school, we felt it would be appropriate to honour and help her,” says principal Mzwakhe Hlatswayo.
