Intersection one of the most dangerous in Joburg

Beware at this intersection.

The intersection at Christiaan de Wet Road and Wilgerood Road recently made it into a daily newspaper’s ‘most dangerous intersections’ top ten list.

This intersection also features on many anti-crime, hijacking and smash-and-grab websites. It has been reported on in the record numerous times but the problem prevails.

According to councillor Carl Mann of Ward 85 he constantly is trying to bring the problem under the attention of the relevant authorities and is trying to involve City Parks, JRA and the metro police.

The main areas he has identified that need to be addressed is ongoing attention to the vegetation surrounding the area. Currently it is overgrown and gives criminals ample place to hide, easy access and easy escape routes. He also has asked JRA to erect a palisade at the side of the intersection to serve as a barrier between the motorists and potential criminals that might be hiding next to the road. Furthermore Mann believes metro police should play a bigger role in ensuring motorists’ safety at this intersection. Currently metro police favours a spot further down the road where they often do stop-checks and speed-trapping.
