UPDATE: Evictors taste their own medicine

Security officer who fired rubber bullets flee from mob.

Less than an hour after police has left the scene of an illegal eviction a stand-off between the effected residents and security company erupted.

A mob of more than 50 disgruntled occupants of the premises and surrounding areas chased the security officer, who shot at them, down Albertina Sisulu Road and brought traffic to a standstill. The security officer fled into a scrap yard for safety.

When his armed colleagues arrived in a bakkie the situation grew more tense and fighting nearly broke out again.

One of the residents, David Mathibe, who was in the thick of things says the officer in charge allegedly told the security contingent to “get their guns ready”.

He says when they contacted the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) they were informed that the department had not ordered the security company to evict the occupants.

In another twist in the tale it transpired that some of the security officers actually were living in the main house on the property. The angry mob then took to the house, removed the security officer’s belongings and burnt it in the back yard.
