Baxter rallies behind Mashaba

Stuart Baxter asked all those in football to stand behind Mashaba and help build a South African football dynasty.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has urged the South African public and those involved in football to get behind newly appointed Bafana Bafana head coach Shakes Mashaba.

The South Africa under-20 tactician was revealed on Saturday as the man to take over from the out-going Gordon Igesund, and Baxter has called for unity behind the new project.

“It is good that it is finally done and dusted,” Baxter revealed after the Carling Black Label Cup.

“If South African football is to succeed we really have to – and I’m talking about you guys, the clubs, the coaches, the football association and the PSL –we have to really work together.”

The English coach then went on to add that all PSL clubs must release players for the national team if Mashaba is to succeed on the bench.

“We cannot continue this. We all have our own interests and we look after our own things. You want to sell your papers and we want to make a team; we don’t want to lose the players,” continued Baxter.

“The games are shifted backwards and forwards. We don’t agree with the national team arrangement. It has to be more together.

“We have to absolutely start a production line. We have to have a vision. How will South Africa play? What will we bring to the world? How will we play? What is good about South African football? What will we improve on and what can we bring to the world?”
