‘Clever Boys’ finish first

Bidvest Wits finished top at the would-be Cape Town Challenge this past weekend.

Bidvest Wits finished on top of the standings in this weekend’s four-team friendly tournament in what would have been the Cape Town Challenge.

Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows and Wits were meant to take part in the Cape Town challenge on the weekend, but it was cancelled after the event organisers pulled out 24 hours before kick-off.

The Clever Boys had previously run out 3-1 winners over Ajax Cape Town on Friday evening, while Sundowns also recorded a win when they edged out Moroka Swallows 1-0.

Two days later the teams were back on the field and it saw Gavin Hunt’s men claim a 1-0 win over the Dube Birds to lift their overall points tally to 10.

Pitso Mosimane’s side took on the hosts later in the day, and they ran circles around Ajax to finish off the game 3-2 in favour of themselves.

On the basis of the original round robin format, the Braamfontein outfit would have taken home the title as champions due to goal difference.
