CTC struggles to get off the ground
The Cape Town Challenge was cancelled, then reinstated, but, for now at least, the tournament will be played.
The Cape Town Challenge has been thrown into a state of controversy after it was initially cancelled 24 hours before kick-off but then said to be back on just hours later.
Ajax Cape Town are meant to play host to Bidvest Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows from July 25-27 in what was expected to be the first of an annual competition.
The Urban Warriors were scheduled to take on the Clever Boys at 18h00 (CAT) at Athlone Stadium but 24 hours prior to kick-off it was announced that the tournament would be cancelled.
Sun Holdings’ China Mpololo revealed on E-TV news that the City of Cape Town failed to grant a permit for the tournament to take place in the Cape, therefore, forcing the competition not to be played.
Ajax, meanwhile, announced just an hour later that the Cape Town Challenge will go on as per normal after the four PSL clubs decided to ‘pull resources to help the City of Cape Town revive the challenge’.
The Ikamva outfit confirmed that management from all four teams immediately met up at the club’s headquarters in order to devise a way of making the Challenge go on as per normal.
As it stands, the tournament will be played.
