Girlology taught at South West Gauteng College

Kotex and Code Teen presented Girlology, the ultimate guide to surviving and thriving as a woman, at the South West Gauteng College.

The female students of South West Gauteng College were given a crash course in girlology by Code Teen and Kotex this past week.

On Tuesday 22 July around 500 female students attended the workshop in the College’s Hall as part of their curriculum. The workshops are incorporated in college curriculums across South Africa in a similar way to subjects like Guidance and Counselling.

“The aim of the workshop is to tackle all aspects of becoming a woman,” founder and life coach Karen Burt says.

“The girls are equipped with potential solutions to real-life challenges faced by our youth, such as substance abuse, gangsterism, teenage pregnancy, domestic violence and HIV/ Aids.”

Burt says that the Girlology workshops started in the Western Cape in 2011 and due to its success, made its way to Kwa-Zulu Natal, North West, Gauteng and even Botswana.

Girlology is a unique term that encompasses the ultimate guide to surviving and thriving being a girl. The workshops target young women between the ages of 17 and 25.

On Tuesday, Burt did group and individual Girlology exercises with the students at the college. Girls were taught to motivate themselves, speak up about their issues and support one another.

“We also tackled some of the topics that are generally not up for discussion in schools and households, as you can imagine,” says Burt, referring to topics such as menstruation, drugs, sex and contraception.

Many students expressed their gratitude to Burt in front of the audience, generally stating that they’ve been forced to deal with some of their more sensitive issues and that they’ve had a positive experience at the workshop.
