Would you like an eye in the sky?
Residents give their opinion on 24-hour neighbourhood surveillance in Roodepoort.
At first residents and employees in Witpoortjie seemed apprehensive about the idea of 24-hour neighbuorhood surveillance.
Once explained, some residents got comfortable with the idea while others remained doubtful about its efficiency. Here’s what they had to say.
Anthony Pastorino
“It is a bit of an extreme measure. I can’t see that there is so much crime in the area that necessitates cameras and surveillance. Although I don’t doubt that it would curb crime, the idea is a bit overboard.”
Gladys Finn
“Constant surveillance would help. It’s a good idea, but I don’t have money to put towards such a measure.”
Kallie Hedin
“Why not? Why wouldn’t you pay? I would – especially considering how it might affect the crime rates in my area.”
Lorato Mamone
“It is a good thing, and I guess I would pay. In my area there is only a local block watch, this extra measure would help.”
Thabang Modise
“I understand the thought behind it and no doubt, we’ll know what goes on in our area. I just don’t think it would eradicate crime. It will still happen, if people want to steal, they will.”
