La Salle delivers at first-ever Catholic cross-country race
Hosts among top three performing schools out of 13.

It was the host, La Salle College (Discovery) as well as its brother school Da La Salle (Victory Park) who were two of three top performing schools at this weekend’s Inter Catholic Cross Country event.
The event, which was the first of its kind between Catholic schools, saw about 250 pupils participate from at least 13 Catholic schools. Sacred Heart College was the other school among the top three.
Other participating colleges in and around Roodepoort include St Matthews, St Teresa, St Dominics, Assumption Convent, St Collumbus, Sacred Heart College, Mayfair Convent, St Thomas, Veritas College and St Catherines.
The course, marked inside the La Salle College’s premises saw primary school participants take on 2km – once through the course – while the high school pupils had to complete 4km – twice through the course. Age groups ranged from U/9 through to matric.
Organiser of the event and an experienced tri-athlete Glen Macnamara described the course as balanced and says he was impressed with the turnout.
“It is a new sporting code for them as most children never took part in such an event nor was it part of the sporting calender before. These pupils do pretty much everything else and because La Salle have a big premises, it made sense to host something like this, something new,” says Macnamara.
“Throughout the course there were some fast areas as well as some nice inclines that really tested them. We also managed to put in a few technical challenges to make it a bit interesting, such as running down a donga, up a donga as well as jumping over streams.”
