In Memoriam — Raymond Guthrie Oliver (1929-2013)

Family and friends remember West Rand stalwart.

On 30 June family and friends fondly will remember the life and times of the founder and first owner of Flora Clinic, Raymond Guthrie Oliver.

Oliver passed away on 30 June 2013 at the age of 82, leaving behind his wife of 45 years, six children and 14 grandchildren.

Oliver was well known on the West Rand as an extremely good businessman and the man who conceptualised and established Flora Clinic where a vegetable farm used to be.

His wife Hester tells how she and her husband used to visit a Portuguese vegetable farm on Sundays. The owner of the farm that was situated where the clinic is today, asked Oliver if he would consider buying the farm for R5 000. Although Oliver felt that he did not really have the money he purchased it nonetheless and the rest is history. Flora Clinic opened its doors in 1972 and has played a valuable role in many a Roodepoorter’s well-being.

The other great love of his life was cricket and often Oliver could be found playing cricket at the Rand Leases Sports Club with his bosom buddy and co-founder of the Caxton News Group, Terry Moolman.
