“People act like zombies”
Security practitioner says we are our own worst enemy.
Independent security practitioner Louis Grobler believes people are their own worst enemy when it comes to crime.
“We act like zombies, because by not being aware we are creating opportunities for criminals to have a go at us, our
house, our car or even our family,” Grobler says. He is experienced in identifying how criminal patterns develop.
Some examples of creating opportunities for criminals are talking on one’s cellphone while waiting in the car for the gate to open, or leaving the gate open, or leaving valuables in sight in your car.
“If we become more aware of what is going on around us, we can bring down crime by 80 per cent. Make yourself less vulnerable by simply being aware,” he added.
Grobler further encourages the community by saying that we can do something about crime.
“Crime is out of hand because people do silly things. We don’t even bother to know who is living next door to us or attempt to meet our neighbour. We leave trolley bins outside, which criminals use to climb over walls. We do not bother to cut the grass and trees in the garden where criminals can hide,” Grobler added.
He also made the point that crime is good business.
“It’s way easier to steal than to work. Criminals also must feed their families and themselves and will do whatever they can to get the job done.”
Grobler says, “The solution is to make the lives of criminals more difficult.
“Do whatever you can. Increase security, get more dogs, add an extra camera and even build a higher wall if you must to prevent becoming a target. Make them think twice. They much rather will choose an easier target than go through the trouble of grinding, smashing and cutting, which will lead to their arrest.”
