Sharing Lionism: Sandy van Heerden
One good deed at a time, says Sandy.
As president of the Lions Club of Wilro Park for 2014/ 2015, Sandy van Heerden is excited to promote ‘Lionism’ one deed at a time.
Van Heerden has been a Wilro Park Lion for 28 years, or since the club was chartered in 1986. She has been president before, and also has served as secretary, membership director, service chairperson, fundraising chairperson, fellowship chairperson and public relations officer.
But what made Van Heerden the Lion she is today?
“The motto of Lions Club International is simply ‘We serve’ and that really was the reason for me joining.
“I want to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate through the projects we launch, as well as random acts of kindness, whether it means we are building a house or visiting the elderly with a smile and tea time treats.”
Her mission for the year is to promote ‘Lionism’ especially among a younger generation.
“We currently have 28 members of which three are in their 20s. I would like to see membership and involvement of young Lions grow and prosper.”
She highlights the biggest event of her Lions year, the Jozi Multiple District Lions Convention.
“This year, the Wilro Park Lions will be convening it.
“It is important for us to network, grow, share ideas and projects and assist one another.”
In her personal life, Van Heerden is an interior decorator and mother of one.
