Heroic dogs roam Roodepoort, 4 June 2014

People from all over the West Rand are lending a hand in searching for two beloved boerbulls that went missing on Monday 26 May. Max and Ulie saved their owners’ lives in 2009 by chasing away two robbers from their home in Gewelhuis Street, Allen’s Nek. A distraught Joop Willemse said they had roamed out of his yard on Monday 26 May and have been missing since.

“On Monday our gate gave problems and the nanny and domestic worker were battling with it, asking neighbours to help. “The dogs must have wandered off while it was open.”

Animal enthusiasts from all over Roodepoort are looking for the dogs, aged 10 and seven, and reporting sightings of them. After they had left the yard they were spotted at a filling station on Christiaan de Wet Road on the Wednesday, allegedly having slept there. They were given water at a nearby plot on Wednesday afternoon.

On the Thursday they were seen at the eye clinic in Constantia Kloof. They tried to gain entrance to a complex at the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and Ontdekkers Road, had been at Florida Junction and also were spotted in Kingfischer Road throughout the rest of the week. On Friday 30 May a resident spotted them at Home Affairs on Albertina Sisulu (previously Main Reef) Road. A newspaper vendor told the owners he later saw them on Albertina Sisulu Road where a man and woman in a white bakkie picked them up and headed towards Witpoortjie.

“It is not known whether these people are good Samaritans who are caring for them or whether they stole them,” says Kerry Stanley who also is involved in the search.

Both the SPCA and Fora are searching for the dogs, as well as Abcam, Dowry, Beagle Watch, Chubb and ADT. As many as 4 000 posters with photos of Max and Ulie were put up all over Roodepoort to help with identifying the dogs. Max has diamond-shaped black patches around his eyes. Both dogs are collared and tagged with their names and owners’ numbers.

The owners are offering a R5 000 reward for the person who finds and returns them safely. Anybody with further information about the dogs can contact either Joop or Mariaan Willemse on 082 788 1682 or 082 468 3668 or 082 554 2264.
