Flashback 9 March 1984
A streaker and fresh property in Ruimsig were among the headlines in 1984.
In the Record edition of 9 March 1984 journalist Gien Elsas told the hilarious story of a streaker running around in the Roodepoort CBD.
As she described it, he was spotted in a parking lot without any clothes on, sporting a wad of cash in his hand. He moved frequently and started running at a stage. Roodepoort police eventually caught up with him and took him to the police station where after he was booked into a nearby institution for observation. Elsas said that the police didn’t suspect him of committing any criminal acts.
Senior citizens were invited to join residents of the Floroma retirement village on a trip to Sun City. The entire package cost only R20, which included their bus fare and lunch on the terrace!
Ruimsig was just about a new residential area back in 1984. In one article, residents were invited to look at stands in Ruimsig, most of them around 1 hectare in size, with the intention to purchase. The article stated that the area was suited perfectly for ‘tired city mice’ and that it had municipal services available. A far fetch from the developed area it is today, both residentially and commercially, the dream at the time was to have a spot to keep chickens, a cow or two and a horse – a quiet getaway from the busy city life. Most of the stands on sale at the time surrounded the golf course that was designed partly by world famous golfer Gary Player.
