Roodepoort’s Sonette ‘survives’ Survivor SA 2014

Survivor SA Champion's Sonette Myburgh (40) tells the Record about her journey.

Last Sunday (9 March) Roodepoort’s own survivor, Sonette Myburgh (40) got voted out of the Survivor South Africa: Champion series by her tribe and rejoined suburbia. The Record caught up with a proud and brave Sonette to hear about the experience.

“I had just missed the previous auditions and was so glad to get in on it this year,” she started her conversation with the Record, as excited as if she just started playing the game.

“However, it is incredibly hard to be that far away from your family.”

Sonette joined her tribe, Utara, and competing tribe Selatan on an island in the South China Sea for the latest season of Survivor South Africa: Champions.

“My greatest concern was my mother, when I left, because she fell ill. I missed my family so much, they were on my mind all the time. I was glad to return to my mother looking much better.”

Sonette reports amazing support from her family as well as her colleagues at the Roodepoort Mortuary, where she works.

Unfortunately, Sonette’s run in the show ended after she competed in Sunday’s episode with injured legs after the Utara shelter’s pole fell on them during a storm. Her injuries made it hard for Sonette to keep up with her tribe as they proceeded through Sunday’s challenges. She felt it her duty to step out so that the team could remain strong and prosper on the island, and she did not use her Immunity Idol because she felt she had to set an example of integrity for her daughter at home. During her exit interview she was quoted as saying, “I know I’m going to see myself and think ‘you stupid girl'”.

“However I knew that they needed strength in the tribe, I respected it, and I have no hard feelings towards anybody.”
