The Promusica theatre officially was re-launched as the Roodepoort Theatre on the evening of 7 February.
Even jaded supporters of the arts will not be able to curb their enthusiasm when they see the new facility that is both modern and elegant, and staffed with some of the friendliest, most professional City employees around.
Roodepoort Theatre along with the Braamfontein and Soweto Theatres now will fall under the umbrella of the Joburg City Theatres.
According to Chairman of Joburg City Theatres, Dr Mongane Wally Seroto, the theatre “will become an institute where community development, personal growth and social mobility are enhanced so that challenges of poverty and vulnerability, inequality and social exclusion are addressed fundamentally, providing both relaxation and enrichment for the souls of the citizens of Johannesburg”.
Except for the theatre having been redone (only the chairs still need to be refurbished), the foyer and bar area is light and inviting, complemented by small, hidden lounge areas that are perfect for those pre-show drinks and interval cocktails.
The theatre now also boast a top-class restaurant called Stages. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan and cool, and an impressive variety of dishes, beverages, wines and cocktails are on offer in a secluded, peaceful corner of the premises.
Guests on the evening were treated to a show called Aria – Opera for everyone, which included big names in opera such as Elizabeth Lombard, Stéfan Louw, Aubrey Lodewyk and Otto Maidi. They were accompanied by the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra and the Voices of the Nation choir.
