Pestroy drummer joins Van Coke Kartel
Pestroy's drummer, Dylan Hunt, is very excited to share the news that he'll be playing for Van Coke Kartel as Jason Oosthuizen leaves the band.
The news that Van Coke Kartel has a new drummer hit facebook news feeds this morning (27 January).
The Record caught up with Dylan Hunt, the new drummer, a few minutes later. Hunt, from Pestroy fame, could not contain his excitement about the phone call.
“The universe just aligned, hey,” he chuckled as he told about how his audition came to be.
“All of this went down at the end of last year.
“I know the guys from Van Coke Kartel and Fokofpolsiekar from playing gigs with Pestroy, and when I heard the news, I mentioned to them that I would like to audition as a drummer.”
Hunt auditioned on 15 December and told the Record that within hours they called him back to say that they were happy with his performance and would like him to play for them.
Hunt proudly hails from Krugersdorp, where he attended Krugersdorp High School, although he spent his primary school years at Randfontein Primary.
“I’m proudly West Rand,” he said, now living in Wilgeheuwel.
Hunt said that he plans to move to Cape Town by April this year to ease practise and recording arrangements.
“I’ll miss the mine dumps,” he joked, saying that he’ll trade it for a mountain, but that he has the West Rand to thank for his success thus far. He has played since the age of 16 and celebrates 16 years of Pestroy success this year. Hunt works at Music Connection.
“Van Coke Kartel is a bunch of really nice guys; I’m very excited to start working with them.”
He doesn’t believe that there will be a language or culture barrier.
“Growing up in small towns such as Krugersdorp and Bellville gives us parallel outlooks on life.”
“Things just aligned … my wife actually resigned from her job just before I got the gig, so she’s free to arrange job interviews in Cape Town.”
The excited drummer sports long dreadlocks, which he boasts his wife helps him maintain.
“It’s much easier than my usually curly hair.”
Although he hasn’t rehearsed with the band itself since the audition, he’s been practising the drumming parts since he got the news. Pestroy fans should not fret, however.
“Pestroy will be playing the RamFest in March this year.”
A video of Jason Oosthuizen, immediate-past drummer of Van Coke Kartel proves that he didn’t leave the band because of a lack of musical talent. An interview with Gary Cool revealed that he plans on pursuing music in the United States.
