Update: Driver in Corlett baby tragedy speaks

Shocked driver thankful to bystanders.

On 27 November a tragic vehicle-pedestrian accident on Corlett Avenue claimed the life of a one-year-old baby girl.

The Record spoke to the driver of the vehicle on 28 November as she wanted to tell her story.

Contrary to what was believed initially it was not the elderly gentleman driving but his 66-year-old wife Eva Schwagel was behind the wheel.

“I turned left into Corlett Avenue from Leerdam Street travelling in the direction of Ontdekkers Road. On my left hand side, close to the Engen garage on Java Street, I noticed a lady carrying a baby. The next moment without warning she just stepped in front of the car,” says the traumatised Schwagel.

“I pulled my car into Java Street and rushed over to the woman in the road. She was trying to get up and I pleaded with her to keep still and then attended to the baby. I felt her pulse but it was very weak,” she continues her horrific tale.

“I was shocked at the sight of the beautiful little body lying in the road.”

“The next moment there were numerous African woman consoling me. They were singing songs and praying with me and for the little soul on the road. Some gave me water.

“One of the ladies was named Fiona. Another, Dipuo Matsobane, came to visit me the same afternoon to check if I am ok. This morning she came past my house again to see if I am alright. I just want to thank all these women,” says a dazed Schwagel.

Schwagel told the Record that two witnesses could corroborate her version of the events.
