Florida TM: A goal is a dream with a deadline

Florida Toastmasters introduce their own GPS system, "for Toastmasters and those pesky new year's resolutions".

The Florida Toastmasters believe their ‘GPS’ system can be applied to both Toasmasters goals and new year’s resolutions.

Dawn Hemming, Florida Toastmasters public relations officer, taught the Record how their GPS system works. “The most important benefit you can gain from being a Toastmaster is the ability to create an action plan to reach your goal, manage your time efficiently and develop your skills so that you can enrich others.”

Hemming explains that the G in the acronym stands for setting a solid goal, “a dream with a deadline”. P represents a plan with precise dates to complete targets towards your goal.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Lastly, S stands for support, which you easily can get at your local Toastmasters Club.

“Your club members will teach you accountability and will provide lots of positive encouragement.

“Like with other GPS devices, you can check this one regularly while you keep moving forward to the finish line.”

Newcomers and guests made the Florida Toastmasters meeting of Tuesday 19 November fresh and exciting. Margaret Roodt was named the winner of the Best Prepared Speech with her talk on success.

Her summary made the reason for this decision clear: “People who succeed have momentum – the more they succeed, the more their desire to succeed and the more they find ways to succeed.”

Club president Robert de Kramer gave a striking speech about President Ronald Reagan’s exhortation to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

‘Rock diva’ Cleone Carter-Smith gave a stunning speech about how plastic surgeons always aim to make mountains out of mole hills. Everybody shrieked with laughter when she spoke about the queen of country music’s killer curves as “weapons of mass distraction”.

“If she ever decides to build a theme park it will probably be located in Silicon Valley.”

Residents are invited to attend the Florida Toastmasters’ hearty meetings every first and third Tuesday of each month at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre. Meetings start at 7.15pm.
