Pathways teachers to ride 94.7 Cycle Challenge for disabled member
Their efforts will go towards learner's wheelchair – principal.
Fay Bjornstad, principal of Pathways Roodepoort confirmed that two teachers will participate in this year’s Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge for one of their pupils.
Pathways Roodepoort is a stimulation centre for children and young adults with severe disabilities. The centre is a non-profit organisation and relies on fundraising and donations to keep the centre thriving.
“Teachers Caryn and Carol Ann have joined the Cycling for Pathways team of at least 109 cyclists who will be riding in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge to shine a light on the centre and raise much-needed funds for Pathways Roodepoort,” Fay says.
“Both teachers have not been on a bicycle since they were children, but have taken up the challenge for a special pupil in their class.
“Caryn and Carol will be cycling their 94.7km for Carla and their personal efforts will go specifically towards Carla’s dreams of a motorised wheelchair. They are appealing to the community for support.
“The total cost of motorising Carla’s buggy is R33 000 so if you would like to sponsor Caryn and Carol and help make a dream come true for Carla, you can contact Pathways Roodepoort on 011 763 5800.”
The pupil, Carla van Niewehuizen joined the young adult group at Pathways Roodepoort in January 2013. She is suffering from severe athetoid cerebral palsy and sits in a specialised buggy.
“Carla is a very bright young lady and dreams of being more independent, therefore she finds it very frustrating and difficult having to rely on people to attend to her every need. She would love to be able to move around independently and have some power and control over her body and her environment,” Fay says.
“Fortunately, there are aids available to help Carla to become more independent, but these aids are very expensive and out of reach for most families,” she adds.
