Suicide tragedy on Wilgerood
After young man had rolled his car he allegedly commited suicide.
A young man, believed to be 19 years of age, died in Helderkruin in what was described by eyewitnesses as a suicide early on Thursday morning 10 October .
The Record was informed that a young man was killed after jumping in front of a moving vehicle shortly after the vehicle he drove, had overturned.
Allegedly the young man was travelling along Wilgerood Road when he lost control of the Pajero he was driving. He hit the pavement, which caused the vehicle to roll and eventually land on its roof. Miraculously the man managed to get out of the vehicle with hardly a scratch.
After speaking to some concerned bystanders, he allegedly ran to the middle of the road and crouched down in front of a moving vehicle (believed to be a white Citi Golf) that ran him over. The driver of the Golf did not stop, leaving the man’s body lying at the intersection of Ruhamah Drive and Wilgerood Road.
Two eyewitnesses of the incident explained to the Record what had happened.
Leigh Williams, who lives a few houses away from the scene of the accident says, “I was awake and heard a loud noise outside somewhere on the road, knowing it has to be nearby. As I looked over my boundary wall (on Wilgerood) I saw nothing, but I knew I had heard something. I decided to go out and check. As I came around the corner, I saw a Pajero on its roof. I approached the vehicle to try to assist. A young man then came crawling from the vehicle, stood up and brushed off some glass fragments. I asked him if he was alright and he replied: ‘I’m fine'”.
Another witness, Werner Weitz, who returned home from a night out with his girlfriend, soon arrived at the scene, also wanting to help.
The two witnesses say that it was while they were on their cellphones to call for help that the young man suddenly decided to run into the road.
“He dropped his bag, ran into the road and crouched down just before the vehicle struck him.”
Roodepoort SAPS are yet to give more details. Also on scene were Joburg EMS and the ER24 help crew.
This is a sad death, may this young mans soul rest in peace and may his family be guided by God’s grace through this hard times
